Annual barrel racing competition set to bring millions into McLennan County

Friday, November 9, 2012 - 1:14pm

Time to pull out your cowboy duds and head over to the Extraco Events Center for the Annual Elite Barrel Race Competition in Waco this weekend.

Each year, the event continues to get bigger and better, bringing in more than two million dollars worth of economic benefits to McLennan County. Horses and their riders come from about 30 different states, as well as Canada and Brazil to compete. Around two thousand dollars worth of cash and prizes are up for grabs for each competitor.

“People compete for fun, but it is a business for a lot of these people," said Elite Barrel Racing owner and producer, T.C. Long. "They sell horses. So, that’s their living. That’s how they make their living. There’s some of them that are school teachers, doctors, lawyers. And, it’s just their pastime and their hobby. So, you have a wide variety of folks.”

Races kick off Friday night at 6 p.m. at the Extraco Events Center. Vendors will be on site. All admission is free.
