BRYAN -- For some the 4th of July isn't just about celebrating America's birthday. It's a social event and a chance to be with family.
Fox 28 went to one local celebration where we talked to people about the importance of the Brazos Heritage Society's 4th of July Celebration at Heritage Park.
And there's a little bit of everything for everyone.
Nat Hilliard, the president of the Brazos Heritage Society said, "We have the blue bonnet quilters guild, we have the Studebaker classic cars here, we have...there's so much here."
But it's not all about the fun and games.
"We come out every 4th of July to enjoy the community and celebrate the 4th and all that it means and the freedoms that we have in America," says Sandra Micklitz.
Freedoms, that allow communities to come together to honor America's independence.
"They should honor all of our troops that have given their lives or parts of their lives to our freedom for us," says Hilliard.
And today's Heritage 4th of July Celebration not only marks the celebration of the 4th of July, but it's a time for the community to come together and Hilliard says that's one of the most important reasons they host this annual event.
"All too often you live in a neighborhood and you don't know who lives next door to you."
Micklitz agrees saying, "It's good to know who lives around you and that you have that communication, you can trust each other and talk to each other about what's going on and keep an eye out for each other."
Whether neighbors come celebrate the 4th, take part in the parade, or just enjoy some live music, all can agree that today is about coming together as a community.
