MCLENNAN CO -- Jim Dunnam held the District 57 state house seat for seven terms. Even though the Democrat carried McLennan County in the election results last night with 64 percent of the votes, his seat now goes to Republican Marva Beck, one of the 22 new GOP members in the Texas House. Beck will be part of a sweeping majority when state lawmakers convene in January.

Jim Dunnam's win in McLennan County wasn't enough to beat Marva Beck in district 57. She won with nearly 2,000 more votes than Dunnam in the end. Beck told us today her first priority will be passing stricter voter ID laws. "The right to vote is sacred, and we need to make sure our elections are honest and true, and that is the first step in doing that," says Beck.

Beck was supported by business interests and lawsuit-limit advocates, giving her campaign coffers big dollars. She says money will be big issue for the House who's task it to make up millions in tax revenue losses.

"There are many issues in the district that I don't think were addressed in the last legislature. Of course, one of our big priorities is to balance the budget without a tax increase," says Beck.

She says she also wants to work on redistricting the area due to new census numbers. Beck was in Austin today speaking to people about her win. She says she will start preparing for her new job tomorrow, setting up a new office and getting out in the district to meet the people she will be representing.
