BRYAN -- Bryan locals know the historical downtown area is one of the best around but now those opinions are validated by a national magazine.

Home Accents Today named the Old Bryan Marketplace as one of its 50 retail stars of 2011. The award honors some of the best local and independent stores in the country.

Kay Conlee, owner of the historical downtown market, says it's a blessing to be considered one of the best.

"Well I'm a big city of Bryan fan and I bought this building before they began their renovations down here so it makes me feel just so joyful. I am so excited because it is a statement for the city of Bryan also for what they have done down here," Conlee said.

Conlee contributes her store's success to the community's support.

Other local stores in Texas aren't doing too bad either. Seven other shops were also named as one of the 50 retail stars of 2011. That's more than any other state. Ohio had the next highest with four stores honored.
