WACO -- The city of Waco will soon be cracking down on illegal parking. Police are now allowing volunteers to hand out the tickets themselves. There were 124 citations issued in Waco from Jan. to Oct. this year, and police say that number is expected to go up significantly after their new program takes affect next month, a day handicap drivers look forward to.
Waco modeled this program after one in Plano increased illegal handicap parking citations from two in 2000 to thousands in 2001. Waco officers says this was long overdue. Drivers parking in handicap spots without a permit will be fined $515. More citations means more money for the city, but officers are hoping for better compliance from drivers, a problem that many handicap drivers have to deal with daily.
One driver with a handicap permit says, "You see that there's no handicap license plate and no handicap hang tag there and you drive around, around and around, and you can't find the spots."
Classes for volunteers who want to issue the citations begins Dec. 4. After that, drivers should expect to see them handing out citations for illegal parking.
