BRYAN -- Coulter Airfield in Bryan could be getting an upgrade but some people who live near the airport are upset with the potential changes.

The Buckley's have lived next to Coulter Airfield for the past four years and noise has never been an issue but they're worried that will change with a runway expansion plan.

"It's runway is only so long and to expand it would get it into a flat path over our subdivision to our east here," said Mr. Buckley.

The city is looking to expand its four-thousand foot runway by a thousand feet, which would allow bigger and more diverse aircraft to land here in Bryan.

Airport manager, Cortney Harris said, "It's going to increase traffic to the area and allow us to sell more fuel and have more people in here on a day to day basis."

And it's the increase in flyers and noise that have the Buckley's nervous about the change.

"My husband was in the air force so we're not prejudice about planes but out here in a residential area and this is where a lot of the growth is."

Mrs. Buckley's husband adds, "And of course a jet is going to make a lot more noise on take-off than a piston engine aircraft that's currently stationed out there now."

But Cortney Harris says the city is looking at ways to minimize the impact on residents as much as possible.

"It's basically going to be divided so it would expand it like 4-600 feet on the north and then another 4-600 feet to the south of the runway."

Harris also says once their research is complete, there will be town hall meetings for concerned homeowners to voice their opinions.
