WACO -- A husband and wife are in jail Tuesday after lying to police officers.

It all started when the couple crashed their car at Highway 6 and Sanger.

Police say they had just left the Crying Shame Night Club in Waco.

40-year-old William Aerl and his wife, 41-year-old Brandy Aerl, told officers their car was stolen when a man pulled a handgun on them, jumped in the driver seat and sped away with them in the car.

Investigators realized the pair were lying, and Sgt. Patrick Swanton with Waco Police says that ties up many officers who could be working on real cases.

"They had officers throughout Waco looking for an individual that was supposedly armed and had car jacked these people. So not only are you tying up the initial officer that's there to make the report, but now you're tying up other officers that are out there trying to investigate," says Sgt. Swanton.

Police say the couple are now charged with making a false report which could be punishable with jail time.
