FBI background checks go up as gun purchases increase
WACO -- The statistics are in and it turns out, the hottest gift this year, was personal protection.
According to FBI reports there was a record number of background checks requested for the purchase of firearms in December.
And Unique Guns and Collectable manager Juliana Davis says the trend started back in 2008.
"There's been a great increase in gun sales and it's kind of held till now," Davis said.
And while sales have remained high for hunting and sport shooting.....
"the majority of sales are for handguns for personal protection."
So why the spike in sales?
"A lot of people have been concerned with the increase in crime lately."
But one of the largest growing demographics for gun purchases, is women.
"We have a number of women who come in the shop that just want something for personal protection. Either they live alone or they just want something to carry," Davis said.
Davis also says that it's important to feel comfortable with your gun, and be prepared to use it, before it could be used on you.
"If you pull it out you should be ready to use it instead of someone being able to over power you and take it away from you."
