Fires being handled well considering conditions

There have been many devastating fires throughout Central Texas, and the fire in Fort Hood at Jack Mountain is still burning.

Even though fire crews have been working countless hours, currently, it is 30 percent contained.

"We're getting a handle on the majority of them. The wind dying down has helped, but our relative humidity is really dry. They're still in that mode of 'let's get these fires out.' You know we just hope we get some of that rain, but we've been hoping for a long time for some and we haven't gotten any," Texas Forest Service Mary Kay Hicks said.

Hicks also says it's a great idea to carry a portable fire extinguisher with you or in your car.

Since the ground is so dry, fires can start anywhere and at any time.

But she also says if there is even a small fire you think you can put out yourself, don't hesitate to call 911.

It's better to have them turn around, then have the fire spread.
