Waco housing development coordinators and Mission Waco are working together to plan a "Better Block Project" in North Waco. They believe this area has great potential to be built up similar to the Oak Cliff neighborhoods in Dallas. This will provide more business opportunities and social activities for the surrounding areas.
Areas in North Waco have seen and economic and development decline in the past, but city officials have high hopes for the future with this new plan.
The process began on 15th Street and Colcord, where buildings are already being repainted and streets are being tended to.
City officials are excited to show the community how great their local area really is. Chris Lazaro, Analyst for community development in Waco, says "I think what is exciting about the project is that it not only gives the chance for people who live in the neighborhood to really show their pride in where they live, but it gives an opportunity for people who live outside that neighborhood to see what's already there."
He says that one key aspect for the project to succeed is for the local community to understand the benefits of further developing the area, and the great opportunities that will be opened up to the residents.
There will be a block party this weekend on the corner of 15th and Colcord, where members of the community can come out and see the potential this area has with these further development plans for the future. City officials say that the block party will be the beginning of a new and improved North Waco, that will benefit not only the close community, but surrounding areas as well.
