WACO -- The year 2012 will bring tax relief to spouses of disabled veterans under a new law effective January 1st.
Texas law already exempts 100 percent disabled veterans from paying property taxes but now their spouses can qualify for the same exemption after their spouse has passed away.
Officials say this will help the spouses who are hit with huge bills when their partner passes away.
"We were made aware that there were folks that were losing their homes or finding themselves being forced, um, to live with family or being forced to, you know, into subsidized homes," said Duncan McGhee of the Texas Veterans Commission.
Veterans must be 100 percent disabled and the injury must be service connected.
Those who lost their spouses in 2010 may also qualify for the property tax exemption.
