WACO -- Planned Parenthood is fighting back against a Texas law that bans them from receiving federal funding from a state health program.

Planned Parenthood of Central Texas is joining its nine affiliates to sue the state for blocking them from participating in the Women's Health Program which is funded through the federal Medicaid program.

Officials said the point of the lawsuit is not to save Planned Parenthood but to ensure low-income women will still have a place to get health care.

"No other organization is excluded based on an affiliation and it is our first amendment right, a constitutional right to affiliate with other healthcare providers whatever kind of services they're providing," said Felicia Goodman, director of community affairs for Planned Parenthood of Central Texas.

More than 40 percent of women who received services through the Women's Health Program did so through planned parenthood.

The organization will lose their funding May 1 unless a judge decides otherwise.
