It's now illegal for anyone under 18 to use a tanning bed in the state of California.
The law was passed this Sunday for what California State Senator Ted Lieu says will help save lives.
Current law states a person under 18 can tan with parental consent.
However, starting January 1st not even a signed release will get a teenager into a tanning bed.
Spray tans and other non UV invasive tanning techniques are still legal for minors.
"The rate, it's increased, the skin cancer has tripled in the women under the age of 40... in the last 3 years...and this has a lot to do with tanning," Esthetician Andrea Hodges said.
California is the first state to pass the law.
Currently, Texas teenagers between the ages of 13 and 18 can tan but must receive permission from a parent or guardian.
