Technology mandatory to graduate high school

WACO -- Technology is everywhere... in our schools, offices and homes.

But should it be mandatory to graduate? The Idaho Board of Education says, yes.

"These days when students go to college, they are expected to have a certain level of knowledge about technology, so I think courses that teach them that and require them to use technology would be fantastic," Waco High School AVID teacher Kay Murphy said.

Now all high school students in Idaho must take two credits online to graduate. While some students may thrive in online education, others say that without the student, teacher relationship it may also cause some students to fall through the cracks.

"I feel strongly about the teacher, student relationship within a classroom. Without the access to an actual human being, teacher, that understands teenagers and what they go through and how they learn, I feel like kids could be lost in the shuffle," Murphy said.

Taking internet based classes is not a new thing for high school students, but the real question is, how do they feel about taking their classes online?

"I would rather have a teacher because, I mean, on the computer you can get help but it's not like they break it down like a teacher does, and for me teacher does it way better than a computer," Waco High School student Eric Helsey said.

On the other hand, " I would choose the online course simply because it's faster and I think I learn more," Senior Waco High School student Rachael Robinson said.

As for integrating mandatory online classes here in Central Texas, that will be up to law makers, but for education administrators...

"It's just important that we have the option to serve our students that way, and not mandated to serve our students that way," Midway ISD information officer Traci Marlin said.
