WACO -- A man wanted for assaulting a police officer is arrested after a high speed chase through Waco this morning.

The U.S. Marshal Fugitive Task Force spotted 28-year-old Darren Chambers in the 3600 block of Waco Drive.

After calling Waco police to help conduct a traffic stop Chambers pulled into a gas station on 17th and Waco Drive as if to stop for the officers.

He then sped off at speeds up to 90 mph and due to the dangers of his driving officers stopped pursuit.

"Officers saw him again in the area of Highway 84 and Franklin we did what we call a cold trail just stayed back try to watch where he was going. Were able to follow him out Highway 84 to about Twin Rivers area where Mr. Chambers vehicle ran out of gas," said Sgt. Patrick Swanton.

Chambers was arrested for the outstanding assault on a peace officer, evading arrest and several traffic warrants.

He was also charged with evading arrest from this morning's incident and possession of cocaine.
