:.: DUEL @ DAYTONA: Qualifying Races :.: One of my favorite events of the entire NASCAR season will kick off on Thursday. The Duel at Daytona is made up of two separate, 150-mile qualifying races, used to set the field for the Daytona 500. In the first race or “Duel”, pole winner Martin Truex, Jr. will lead the other odd qualifiers (1st, 3rd, 5th, etc…) to the green flag. In Duel No. 2, Mark Martin will lead the even qualifiers (2nd, 4th, 6th, etc…). What makes these races so great is that every car in the race is on a different agenda. For Truex and Martin, they are locked in and will start next Sunday (assuming neither car crashes) first and second. But every other car is trying to better their starting position in the 500. That makes for drama. What makes for a great race is that five or six cars in each race are trying to make the Daytona 500 period. They don’t care where they start, as long as they start. Have you ever heard the expression, “desperate people do desperate things?” Then you understand what goes down in the Duel at Daytona. For Dale Earnhardt, Jr. the race is a good test to see what kind of car he will have for the 500. But for a guy like Scott Riggs…it’s all or nothing. Let the Duel begin! :.: THE FAV'S :.: The Duel at Daytona typically gets the Fantasy racing fans excited, so I will give you my opinion of who to watch for in each of the races. Let the Duel begin! - No. 1 - Winner: Jeff Gordon Surprise: Michael Waltrip Forget it: Joey Logano - No. 2 - Winner: Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Surprise: Brian Vickers Forget it: Reed Sorenson Watch the 51st Daytona 500 on Sunday, Feb. 15 – Live on FOX44 in HD @ NOON.
