BOWIE, Texas (AP) - Volunteers are caring for nearly 500 dogs that authorities seized from a kennel near Bowie.
The Montague County Sheriff's Department served search warrants Tuesday morning after receiving complaints that dogs at Maggic Pets/Heddins Kennel hadn't received proper veterinary care.
Sandy Grambort, a supervisor with the Humane Society of North Texas, said some of the dogs had skin conditions and open sores. She said not all the dogs appeared to have health problems.
Cloyce Heddins told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that the dogs received proper care and authorities had bad information.
Grambort said the dogs were found in crates that were double-stacked in outbuildings, as well as in outdoor pens and kennels.
The dogs were transported to Fort Worth where a warehouse was donated to temporarily house the animals.
