Victim identified in Killen standoff

Killeen Police are investigating an early morning homicide resulting from a reported hostage situation in Killeen.

Killeen Police received a 911 call, Monday, December 9, at 5:23 a.m., from a woman who said she was taken hostage by a man in the 900 block of Mimosa Drive. The woman told officers she was able to escape from the apartment and that the man was still inside with a weapon.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the witness was at 916 Mimosa #1 with a 41-year-old man, when the victim knocked on the door to speak with the man. The man and the victim exchanged words in the doorway when the he shot her. The suspect then threatened the witness and took her hostage and sometime later, she was able to escape unharmed and call 911.

Officers arrived and spoke with the witness and located the body of the victim behind 919 Mimosa. The tactical response unit was deployed and convinced the suspect to surrender. He was taken into custody without incident at 7:24 a.m.

The victim, a 43-year-old Karen Louise Edwards, of Killeen, was pronounced deceased at 8:04 a.m., by Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke. An autopsy was ordered to be performed at the Southwest Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas.

 

The name of the 41-year-old suspect will be withheld until this case is reviewed by the Bell County District Attorney’s Office and formal charges are returned.

The Criminal Investigations Division continues to investigate this homicide and information will be released as it becomes available.
