La Joya, TX — Flashing lights and backed up traffic were the early signs of a terrible accident on Expressway 83. A driver struck Josue Uranga, 13, as he was walking to school, killing him on impact.
His mom remember's when he left the house at 5:30 a.m.
"This morning he took off to the Subway to get picked up by the bus, but obviously I don't know what happened. This school called me at 6:16 and said that the children in the bus had witnessed an accident and that my son was not at school and for me to work my way up to the Subway and see what had happened," sobbed Tanya Gonzales.
Uranga's step-father was on scene first, and it only took a glance to know the worst had happened.
"He saw my son's shoe. And he only recognized him because of the shoe. And he is like, 'Tanya, Josh is dead.' I couldn't bear the notice," said Gonzales.
Gonzales overcome with grief did come to the scene and is now asking police for answers. But it's still early and police are still investigating.
The driver did remain on scene and is not in police custody.
The family will need help with funeral costs. If you would like to help, please contact La Joya Credit Union and ask for account number 800 111. It will be under the name Tanya Bermea.
