80 degree temperatures have already made their way into Central Texas this year. And unfortunately, with the heat comes the invasion of insects, specifically termites.

Local pest control companies say they've already begun responding to an influx of calls to get rid of the intruders. Summer time is the perfect time for nuisance critters to come out and wreak havoc on your homes. And already, termites are out with a vengeance.

"I got my first swarm call, it was about three weeks ago," said Lynn Pest Control owner Cody Bledsoe.

Bledsoe says many homeowners don't even know they have these insects invading until heavy damage has been done.

"The biggest problem is you don't always know you have them. They can be inside your wall for three to five years before that swarm ever comes out," said Bledsoe.

So what are they doing all that time?

"They're building. They're eating the wood in your house, and then three to five years later, the first swarm will come out. And, that's usually when you really know that you have them," said Bledsoe.

Bledsoe recommends you get your home inspected at least once every six months. And most pest control companies, he says, perform this service for free.

"Inside and outside inspection and it doesn't cost you one dollar," said Bledsoe.

To make sure termites don't stand a chance at your house, Bledsoe says make sure no dirt or plants cover your house's foundation.

"If you can see your foundation all the way around, that's a great way to protect your house. Because, this is where termites are going to come in, they're going to build tubes up along your foundation and come in where your brick is," said Bledsoe.

The cost of getting rid of termites after they've invaded can be costly; we're talking thousands of dollars.
