COLLEGE STATION, Tx (KYLE) — In 2012 six firefighters were killed in Texas.
Monday local first responders in Bryan-College Station paid tribute to the fallen in a memorial ceremony at College Station's Fire Station No. 6.
Of the six fallen, first responders honored one of their very own, Brazos County Precinct 3 Volunteer Firefighter Dick Danes.
Every year College Station holds a fallen firefighter memorial in conjunction with National Fire Prevention Week.
Later this week College Station's Honor Guard will head to Maryland for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation's memorial weekend at the National Fire Academy to honor nearly 100 firefighters killed in the line of duty in 2012.
"This is a somewhat solemn ceremony but we also rejoice in the lives of these fallen firefighters," said Bart Humphreys with the College Station Fire Department. "They did so much for their communities and gave so much back to where they lived."
Dick Danes unexpectedly died last year during a training exercise out at Texas A&M's Engineer Extension Service.
At next year's ceremony, first responders will honor Lt. Pickard and Lt. Wallace, who were tragically killed in the Knights of Columbus hall fire in February.
