Belton shooting victim dies, suspect remains in hospital

The victim, who was involved in a shooting in Belton on June 4,  has died.

Edward Charles Hermann, 41, died at Baylor Scott and White in Temple on Saturday.

Karl Lee Wiggins, 61, of Killeen, who has been identified as Hermann's attacker remains in the hospital under guard by authorities. Wiggins is charged with a second degree felony of assault with a deadly weapon and a third degree felony of driving while intoxicated, third or more.

According to authorities, Wiggins and Hermann were transported to the hospital late Wednesday following shootings in the 2800 block of 2410 Spur in Belton.

Officials say, at about 9:06 p.m. Belton police received an emergency call about a shooting, with the suspect still on the scene. Two officers and a supervisor arrived at the address and immediately ordered a man holding a gun to drop his weapon. The man, Wiggins, refused to drop his gun and was shot multiple times after he pointed his weapon in the direction of officers. The first victim, Hermann, was shot in the head before police arrived.

No police officers were hurt in the incident. The officers have been placed under administrative leave while the Texas Rangers conduct an investigation into the shooting.
