Waco, Texas — A boy and his family got the chance to personally thank the Waco PD officer who saved him from drowning this past weekend.
According to police, on Friday evening at 7:30 p.m, during the Fourth of July celebration at Indian Spring Park in downtown Waco, a 7-year-old little boy was on the riverwalk. The child, who is named Donnie, was with his older brother and was playing near the water when he stepped off the sidewalk and onto a ledge in the water. The ledge was wet and covered in moss causing the little boy to slip and fall into deeper water. The child went under the water due to the depth and could not recover his footing.
Detective Dennis Taylor, seeing the boy in desperate need, went into the water in full uniform and gear, went under himself but was able to push the boy up to the surface where the child was then grabbed and pulled back to the sidewalk with the help of a citizen. Detective Harper was then able to reach out and grab Detective Taylor and with the help of another citizen both officers were able to get back on the sidewalk and out of the water.
"Without a doubt these detectives’ actions saved the life of the 7-year-old boy. The child did have to be transported by ambulance to Hillcrest as he was coughing up water and complaining of chest pain due to him inhaling water," said Sergeant W.P. Swanton in a press release.
