City considering allowing tattoo shops in downtown Bryan

If you walk down Main Street in downtown Bryan you'll see local shops, bars and restaurants.

One business you won't see though?

"Tattoo studios at the time were not included in the allowed or potentially allowed uses," said planning administrator, Martin Zimmermann.

That could be changing soon since the city's planing and zoning committee recently recommended allowing tattoo businesses to apply for a conditional use permit so they can open up shop in south downtown.

"I think we came up with a good compromise on how to deal with this issue in this particular context because our research shows there is really no one-fits-all solution," Zimmermann said.

A compromise that some see as controversial.

Zimmermann tells us, "Some see it as a potential detriment whereas others see it as a good addition to the sort of art environment and culture that has developed in the downtown area."

Kristy Petty, owner of The Village Cafe, is one of those people; she thinks it's a perfect fit.

"We want everyone to feel welcome in downtown," Petty said. "If you don't have a place where you know you fit, you probably fit downtown somewhere so I think having a nice art studio and tattoo studio down here is just going to give us one more pocket for people to fit into."

The planning and zoning committee will present their recommendation to city council on July 9th and 23rd.

If approved, Arsenal Tattoo in College Station plans to move to downtown Bryan and open up just down the block from Petty's business.

Tattoo shops? Plural? No.... They have to be a mile apart. This story is trying to scare people that Main St. will be overwhelmed by tattoo shops. Silly.
