The Texas Department of Transportation is having their 12th annual "Click it or Ticket" campaign this month. All local area Law Enforcement Agencies will be participating in the campaign and they will be focusing extra resources on issuing seatbelt violation tickets.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2011, 21,253 vehicle occupants were killed in crashes and 52 percent of those crashes the person was not wearing a seat belt.

Men from the ages of 18-34 are less likely to wear seat belts and are at a greater risk of injury or death.

Motorists are 75 percent less likely to be killed in a rollover crash if they are buckled up.

One of five Americans fail to regularly wear a seat belt when driving or riding in a motor vehicle.

All passengers, even adults in the back seat must be buckled up. Children younger than 8 years old have to ride in a child safety seat or booster seat unless they are taller than 4 feet 9 inches. Violations can result in fines and court costs up to $200.

Your local Law Enforcement agencies will join other Law Enforcement officers from across the State of Texas to step up enforcement of the state's safety belt laws between May 20 and June 2, including the Memorial Holiday Weekend. We encourage all vehicle occupants to "Buckle Up."
