Copperas Cove man arrested after police find suspicious items

A Copperas Cove man was arrested after police found suspicious items at his house.

According to the Copperas Cove Police Department, officers responded to a house, located in the 400 block of South 7th Street, in reference to suspicious items located inside the house, during the evening on September 10. Fort Hood EOD also responded and assisted in securing the items. The house was deemed safe and secure, with all hazards removed at around 2 a.m. on September 11.

Later that day, around 7 p.m., the Copperas Cove Police Department was called back to the home, in reference to an object of concern. For precautionary measures, Fort Hood EOD responded as well and assisted the Copperas Cove Police Department. The object was found to be non-hazardous. The home was deemed safe at approximately 11:00 p.m.

As a result of the searches, Jason Alan Garthwaite, Sr. was arrested and charged with Abandoning or Endangering a Child and Prohibited Weapon. Garthwaite was later arraigned by Judge Price on the two felony charges. Bond was set on the amount of $150,000. Garthwaite is currently being held at the Coryell County Jail.

The Copperas Cove Police Department and the ATF are continuing to investigate the incident. Additional federal charges are pending. The Copperas Cove Police Department will continue to release information as it becomes available.
