Craigslist scammers using counterfeit money in exchange for high-end goods

In the past couple of months we have seen an increase in craigslist scammers using fake money to buy goods.

Victims are posting items for sale on craigslist and then meeting suspects to complete the transaction.

Our cases involve the sale of high-end electronics including; iPads, computers, gaming systems, etc.

Once the sale is agreed upon, the suspects scam the victims by giving counterfeit currency in exchange for whatever product the victim is selling.

So far the suspects have been described as black males and black females. We have not at this point been able to identify or arrest suspects in these cases.

We caution all involved in these types of transaction to use due diligence in doing so. All money should be checked before completing the exchange, meet in public places to complete the transaction, write down license plates of those involved and don’t go alone if possible.
