CS city council considering $30M Northgate development

Thursday, February 14, 2013 - 4:18pm

The skyline of Northgate is constantly changing on a daily basis.

"A lot of businesses have been popping up all over especially residential areas."

Currently there are three multimillion dollar housing complexes already in the works and a fourth one could soon be calling Northgate home if city staff members approve a proposed $30 million development.

"Do we really need another one?" asks Randall Heye, CS economic development analyst. "Well the market is telling us that there is the demand for that and that's why the developer is so interested in buying this from the city."

The new four to eight story multi-family structure would sit at the corner of Wellborn and Church Avenue on about 3.6 acres of land currently owned by the city.

"That entire block, the only money that it does bring in, is from Café Eccell and it's what they pay us for their property tax on that building. Other than that, the property just sits there."

Jeremy Pitre, a bartender at the Corner Bar, says all the new development will only make Northgate better.

"I think more businesses will eventually start to pop up and it'll make it more competitive for everyone down here."

If approved by city council, Cafe Eccell would be incorporated into the future property's plans and the project would need to be completed by 2016.
