Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers made more than 1,600 DWI arrests during a special enforcement period recently, which included the Labor Day holiday. The targeted DWI enforcement, which spanned 18 days, included additional patrol hours funded by a Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) grant.

“DPS works every day to help make Texas roadways safer for all travelers, and taking dangerous drivers off the road significantly improves our ability to achieve that goal,” said DPS Director Steven McCraw. “Thanks to this Labor Day enforcement period, officers were able to remove impaired drivers from highways and prevent potentially deadly crashes.”

DPS Highway Patrol troopers made 1,682 DWI arrests during the Labor Day enforcement effort, and 218 of those arrests were a direct result of the increased patrols funded by the TxDOT grant.

This DPS enforcement effort also resulted in more than 24,440 speeding citations, more than 3,540 seat belt/child safety seat citations, 1,223 fugitive arrests and 977 felony arrests.
