Fire causes damage at Copperas Cove HEB

Thursday, April 4, 2013 - 12:43pm

The Copperas Cove Fire Department was dispatched at 3:10 p.m. on Wednesday to 2990 E. Hwy 190 to the HEB Plus store. Three fire engines, two ambulances, and three command units initially responded.

Fire department personnel were directed to a food cooler located in the back portion of the building. Heavy smoke was found inside the cooler. Authorities used a portable fire extinguisher to extinguish a small fire in the cooler a few minutes after they arrived.

An investigation was conducted by the Copperas Cove Fire Marshal and the cause was found to be isolated to an electrical switch inside the cooler unit. Property damage was limited to the electrical switch and the immediate area around the switch. Food products in the cooler are being assessed by HEB staff at the time of this release. Smoke was limited to the cooler area itself.

The entire store was evacuated due to the fire, even though the fire was limited to the interior of one cooler.

The store was closed after the evacuation and as of 5:30 PM today was re-opened for business in the unaffected areas. HEB staff will be conducting a damage assessment and will re-open the affected area at future time.

No persons were injured during this incident.

There is no loss estimate available at this time.
