A jury has found a former Central Texas mayor guilty of sexually assaulting a child.

Charlie Lee Stewart, Sr. was indicted on aggravated sexual assault of a child charges in October 2012. His trial began on Monday in a Belton courtroom.

Stewart, 58, was arrested on July 20, 2012 following an investigation that began on June 28 when officials at Scott and White Hospital contacted police. They informed authorities that a victim told her mother and a forensic interviewer that Stewart had sexually assaulted her several times, starting in the summer of 2011. The victim was 12-years-old when the alleged sexual acts took place.

Stewart resigned from his position at Killeen ISD on July 30. In September, Stewart was forced off of the city council for missing three consecutive regularly scheduled council meetings.

Stewart remains in the Bell County Jail on a half-million dollar bond. Sentencing for Stewart will take place on November 5.
