BRAZOS COUNTY, Tx (KYLE) — It's a parents worst nightmare.
And now one Brazos County family is dealing with an unimaginable loss after their four-year-old son was tragically run over and killed at his family's home on Ashley Lane.
"As you can imagine this family is devastated," said Brazos County Sheriff Chris Kirk. "It's a tragic situation."
Sheriff Kirk tells us the little boy was playing outside in the yard at around 6:35 p.m. Tuesday night when his dad got home from work.
The father stopped his truck in the driveway to say hi to the toddler before pulling around back...that's when Sheriff Kirk says the unfortunate accident happened.
"The child had backed away from the truck and as he turned into the back of the house where the carport was, apparently the child had gotten close to the vehicle and it looks like the dual-wheel fender knocked him to the ground and the rear wheel passed over the child," said Sheriff Kirk. "The father knew he hit something and when he got out of his truck he found his son motionless on the ground."
The little boy was then rushed to the College Station Medical Center by his parents but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Sheriff Kirk says the first responders and investigators involved in this care are being given counseling services to help cope.
"Anytime you work the death of a child or a serious injury to a child you can't help but personalize it and think of your own children and grandchildren, so it's tough."
Preliminary autopsy reports show the toddler died from head injuries.
The Sheriff's Office is continuing to investigate and child protective services has been notified.
