BRAZOS COUNTY -- A freak accident with a handgun late last night put one College Station man in the hospital after authorities say his wife shot him in the stomach.
Lauren Holman explains who the intended target was and how the husband became the accidental victim.
It wasn't a case of mistaken identity, just a freak accident after a wife shoots her husband while trying to kill a skunk.
"When we first got the call we were very suspicious about it and we thoroughly investigated it and it truly is an accident," said Brazos County Sheriff Chris Kirk.
Brazos County Sheriff deputies responded to the home on Wayfarer Lane just after nine Sunday night to investigate the shooting.
We spoke to the son today who declined to go on camera but told us his mom was out on the back porch trying to shoot at a skunk but the bullet ricocheted off the porch, went in through the back door and hit the husband in the abdomen.
And Sheriff Chris Kirk tells us the family's story adds up.
"All the statements were consistent and even the physical evidence, the ricochet, we were able to trace the bullet and it all matches so it really was an accidental shooting."
The husband was flown to a Houston hospital for his injuries but we're told he will make a full recovery.
And as for the skunk...
"The skunk survived," said Sheriff Kirk. "In fact, as our investigators were there into the wee hours of the morning, the skunk returned to the scene of the crime."
