Free ride program continues for Waco ISD students

Waco ISD and Waco Transit have reached an agreement to continue the "Students Ride Free Program" on Waco Transit for the upcoming school year, 2013-2014.

After almost 800 rides during the six week pilot program, which ended June 6, all parties understood that this was a positive benefit for the students and families here in Waco. Through negotiations between the mayor, the superintendent of Waco ISD, and the general manager at Waco Transit, all wanted to see the program continue which will allow any student to ride to and from school or to a school event free of charge. All they are required to do is show their WISD student ID.

The district says they had hoped that the service might continue on at no cost to WISD, but realized that there are costs involved to accommodate additional riders on the Transit busses. The district was able to allocate some unused grant funds from this past year to cover the costs for next year. WISD anticipates that as the program becomes more widely known and permanent, at least for this next school year, ridership will increase and along with it boost attendance at every school in Waco.
