Grandmother killed, 4-year-old injured during shooting at home in New Orleans East

A 4-year-old child is in the hospital and his 44-year-old grandmother was killed during a shooting this morning in New Orleans East.

The New Orleans Police Department reports that the shooting happened at roughly 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6. The shots were fired inside a home located in the 13000 block of Maplewood Drive.

When emergency responders arrived on scene, they found the woman, Helena Smith, in the upstairs portion of the home. She had multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Shortly thereafter, they found the young boy suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. He was alert and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

WDSU reports that the boy was able to answer questions from police.

Another person was located inside the home when the shooting happened, but officials did not provide any additional information regarding that individual.
