WACO -- Today construction crews broke ground on yet another piece of the 4 billion dollar Interstate 35 expansion project.
Just in time for the proposed opening of the new Baylor Stadium, bridges over the Brazos will be completed in 2014 increasing the highway's capacity and safety in the heart of Waco.
The type of bridge, called an "extradosed" is the first of its kind in the state and city officials hope it will put an added spotlight on Waco.
"It's going to serve as a gateway, it's going to serve as a defining infrastructure, a defining structure that is going to say, 'you're in Waco, and we're proud to have you here,'" Transportation Commissioner Bill Meadows said.
The highway itself will not be closed down during construction but the access roads will be re-worked and the current turn-arounds will instead lead into the new bridges.
