Waco, Tx — A new proposal, presented to the City of Waco, is asking for equal protection against discrimination, specifically against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender discrimination.
In the city's current policy, they officially bar employment discrimination based on race, sex, religion, and disability, among others. Now, the Equal Employment Opportunity Advisory Council has proposed that the city add a policy declaring non- discrimination based on sexual orientation.
"At this point, there is no protection against discrimination against people because of their sexual orientation. That's not to say that it happens, however this is a group that has historically faced discrimination," said Paul Derrick, a concerned citizen and LGBT rights advocate.
The city says they do not and have not discriminated based on sexual orientation. However, this policy will now have to be considered by the city attorney and the city manager.
