Gun, magazine found in student's backpack at TX school

A Marshall student was arrested Monday morning after an off duty officer discovered a handgun in his backpack.

At 8:00 a.m., an off duty Marshall police officer, who works security for the district, found a 9mm handgun, a magazine with ammunition and some clothes in a student's bag.

The teenager, Jawone Washington, 19, attends the district's Alternative Education Program. He was booked into the Harrison County Jail for places weapons prohibited, a 3rd degree felony.

The offense carries charges of prison time in the Texas Department of Correction for no more than 10 years or less than two years and a fine not exceeding $10,000.

The investigation is ongoing.

Marshall ISD released the following statement to KETK:

MISD and District Alternative Education Placement officials discovered a 9mm handgun in the backpack of a 19-year old senior
student on Monday morning. The handgun was not loaded, but a loaded magazine was also discovered in the backpack.

Marshall Police were called to the DAEP and took the student into custody along with the weapon. All other questions are being referred to the Marshall Police Department at this time.
