Hewitt, TX — Hewitt police are investigating what they call an "odd situation" that took place early Thursday morning.
In the surveillance video, released by Midway ISD, you can see a man petting a cow inside of the school district's agricultural barn around 4:30 a.m. Police say the man spent about 30 minutes inside the barn feeding and petting the animals before setting fire to two storage sheds. A citizen happened to notice the fire and contacted authorities. Waco Fire Department responded to the scene and put the fire out.
The fire destroyed one of the sheds, causing severe damage to the other. There was also fire damage to the hay and feed being stored. Police say no animals were harmed.
At this point, police are looking to identify the man and find out what was behind the bizarre behavior. Hewitt PD Chief Jim Devlin says they are unsure of the motive, saying it could range from attempted theft to curiosity.
"The behavior in itself is kind of strange, you know. But, I don't know exactly what's going on, what's in the mindset of that individual, if there's drugs or alcohol that may play a part into it. We don't know that yet," said Devlin.
Devlin says the vandal could be facing burglary and arson charges.
Now, the police department is asking the community to help them identify and locate the vandal. He's described as a white male in his mid to late 20's with several visible tattoos, short dark hair, some facial hair, wearing a black t-shirt and grey shorts.
"We know that somebody knows this individual. We just need to be pointed in the right direction so we can go find them," said Devlin.
If you have any information, please contact the police department.
