In light of recent accidental shootings by kids getting access to guns, Hewitt Police Department wants to remind the community of proper gun safety to avoid these types of fatalities.

Hewitt PD gives out free gun locks to anyone who asks, thanks to Project Childsafe. Right now, they have about 2,500 locks on site. The locks go through the chamber of a semi-automatic gun and through the magazine well to prevent accidental firing. The department says they've given out these locks for years now. And, while the locks are helpful, they shouldn't be the only method of safely storing a gun from children.

"Even if you run the lock through the gun, the gun still needs to be put up somewhere. It still cannot be accessible by a child. So, you know, locked up in a gun safe is the ideal example of weapon safety," said Hewitt Police Chief Jim Devlin.

Officials say the guns should be kept in a place where children can't easily access them. And, children should be taught age appropriate gun safety.
