Killeen, Texas (KWKT) — A Killeen man is on Trial in Travis County for the murder of a Pflugerville man during the Texas Relays weekend in Austin.
Derrick Leroy Kuykendall, 23, is facing charge of a first-degree murder for the shooting death of Bennie Heslip, 23.
According to an arrest affidavit, on March 31, at 3:15 a.m., police responded to a report of the shooting at a parking lot located at the intersection of Trinity Street and East 11th Street in downtown.
Arriving officers found the victim lying on the ground with an apparent gunshot wound to the chest, the affidavit said.
Witnesses told police that an argument erupted between a friend of Heslip and a female of Kuykendall. Kuykendall approached Heslip and shots were fired.
The 23-year-old was arrested after police received an anonymous tip about the shooting.
Kuykendall is being held in Travis County Jail in lieu of a $350,000 bond.
