Killeen, TX — An early-morning fire at an auto body shop in Killeen caused the city to close a nearby park because of chemicals inside the building that fueled the blast.
The 911 call came in shortly after 2:30 a.m.
Fire crews responded to see Tasco Auto Color at 800 Highland Ave. fully engulfed.
The fire marshal’s office was on site investigating what caused the fire.
The city was concerned that water used to fight the fire mixed with those chemicals and spilled off into Marlboro Park.
The products inside are also making it difficult to figure out what happened.
“When you’re investigating a fire, you are looking for the hottest burn area; the deepest char to indicate where that fire burned the longest," said Killeen Fire Department Chief Jerry Gardner. "But with the amount of fuels in this building, sometimes it is hard to determine.”
Fumes were still being sent downwind as of Thursday afternoon.
Results of the investigation will be released as soon as the department completes its case.
