MCLENNAN COUNTY -- The Waco Humane Society and McLennan County have reached an agreement to extend an animal control contract.
After a month-long debate, members of both the county and the non-profit agency decided on a $15,000 extension through the end of the fiscal year.
Commissioners voted 4-1 to extend the contract which houses stray animals from unincorporated areas.
The county will also continue paying a $75 per-animal fee up to a $15,000 cap.
"The only major change is that owner surrenders, if a person is bringing in their personal pet, they will have to pay the surrender fee which will be $45," said Gina Ford, interim director of the Waco Humane Society.
Ford said an influx of strays and large animal seizures has contributed to their need of an extension.
Now the humane society is seeking an $85,000 contract for the next budget year which starts October 1.
