COLLEGE STATION, Tx (KYLE) — Every day emergency room staff personnel treat patients for a number of different reasons but Tuesday morning the roles were reversed when a nurse at the College Station Med needed the help.
"The victim was stabbed in the chest area, in the side," said Lt. Chuck Fleeger with the College Station Police Department.
Police say they were called to the ER in response to a stabbing.
When they arrived they found that 23-year-old Yuchen Lei attacked his nurse with a pocket knife.
"The nurse that had been attacked began to call for assistance," said Lt. Fleeger. "Other emergency room personnel came in and were able to gain control of the suspect and remove the knife from his hands."
Lei is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and harassment of a public servant because during questioning police say Lei became violent again.
"The suspect became combative and spit in the face of one of the responding officers," Fleeger said.
And while Lt. Fleeger says this is a rare incident, there are laws now in place to better protect emergency room personnel from assault; upping the charge from a misdemeanor to a felony.
