Milam County, TX — An Austin man was arrested after authorities say he stole a vehicle and evaded arrest.
According to the Milam County Sheriff’s Office, officers got a call about a suspicious vehicle in the area of County Road 418 around mid-morning on Wednesday. Milam County Deputy John Torres located the vehicle. However, the driver of the vehicle fled and evaded the deputy until a few hours later when Milam County Lt. Chad Marek located the suspect vehicle off of County Road 418 near a corn field, at which time the suspect fled again.
The vehicle was identified as a truck stolen from the Little River-Academy ISD, however deputies lost sight of the vehicle a second time when the suspect drove into a heavily wooded area where he then fled on foot. Area DPS Troopers and Milam County Constables Beathard and Anderle converged on the area with Milam County Deputies to contain the suspect who was also believed to have been responsible for several burglaries and thefts in and around Little River-Academy. Additionally a DPS Air Unit helicopter from Waco assisted searching for the suspect as did a Mounted/Search Dog Unit from TDC out of Marlin.
The suspect was taken into custody a few hours later by Chief Deputy Chris White and two TDC officers on horseback when the search dogs located him hiding in thick underbrush and woods over half a mile from where he had abandoned the stolen truck. The suspect was identified as David Weir, 46, out of Austin, Texas. He was charged with two counts of Felony Evading Arrest, Possession of a Controlled Substance, Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, and Violation of Parole. Weir is currently being held at the Milam County Jail pending arraignment.
