Killeen, Texas (KWKT) — The Killeen Police Department is mourning the loss of one of their officers and is helping another officer recover.
Officer Robert "Bobby" Hornsby, 32, was killed in the line of duty on July 14, 2013, from gunshot wounds. Hornsby was a four year veteran of the department and was a member of the Tactical Response Unit (SWAT). He leaves behind a wife and two children; a four-year-old daughter and one-year-old son.
Officer Juan E. Obregon Jr., 33, suffered a gunshot wound to his leg and is in stable condition. Obregon has been with the department for 10 years and is also a member of the Tactical Response Unit.
Around 11:40 p.m. Saturday night, police were called to the scene of a man causing a disturbance in the pool area of the Grandon Manor Apartments in the 1600 block of Grandon Drive.
Upon arrival, officers found a male inside an apartment holding a long rifle in a threatening manner. The Tactical Response Unit was deployed and they attempted to speak with the man.
The suspect fired one shot and officers then tried to take him into custody when the man backed into his apartment and armed himself with an AK47 and began shooting at the officers.
Officers fired back killing the suspect but not before he had shot both officers Hornsby and Obregon.
The name of the male has not yet been released pending the notification of his next of kin.
