Prom celebration can bring drinking concerns

Many high school juniors and seniors will celebrate prom this weekend. Along with the celebration stems concerns about parties and underage drinking.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, over one-third of all teen traffic fatalities involve alcohol during prom and graduation season.

Based on a study done by Students Against Destructive Decisions, 54 percent of teens across the nation say they have drank more than four drinks on prom night.

The Voice, a local nonprofit organization in Waco, provides students with alcohol and drug prevention education would like to remind parents to talk to their children about underage drinking.

Adults who provide alcohol to a minor, who is not legally their own, can face fines up to $4,000 and up to a year in jail.

Local authorities also would like to remind students to have fun but be safe.
