KILLEEN, Texas, September 14, 2012 — The American Red Cross is providing shelter management, meals and support in a partner shelter for 29 Killeen residents displaced by last night’s terrible apartment fire on Gray Street. Red Cross workers came together last night with partners from the City of Killeen and the United Methodist Church to assist neighbors affected by the fire.
“Our hearts and thoughts are with all the families hurt and recovering from this fire,” said Debbie Immel, Interim Chapter Executive. “This fire is a tragic reminder of the value of preparedness. We encourage everyone to check their smoke alarms, revisit their evacuation plans, and double check their disaster preparedness kits”
The shelter is expected to stay open with Red Cross support until at least Monday, and additional Red Cross volunteers are on standby if needed.
