RSVP receives $195,000 grant for West recovery project

The Heart of Texas Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), sponsored by McLennan Community College, will receive a $195,000 grant from The Corporation for National and Community Services to fund an 11-month recovery project in West.

The grant will fund four new positions for RSVP, which include: assistant for educational services, a database technician for resources and volunteer information, a volunteer coordinator and an administrative assistant.
 

A check presentation will take place at the West Community Center. In attendance will be Senior Corps Director Erwin Tan, The Corporation for National and Community Service Chief Executive Officer Wendy Spencer, Senior Corps of Texas Director Terry Gunnell, Senior Corps Program Specialist Leslie McLain, One Star Associate Director Emily Steinberg, Texas Senior Corps President Walter McFadden, City of West Special Liaison Karen Bernsen, West Mayor Tommy Muska, Precinct 3 County Commissioner Will Jones along with other dignitaries from MCC and other local, state and federal offices.

The Corporation for National and Community Service chief executive officer Wendy Spencer will meet with RSVP and MCC administration in Waco before traveling to West around 11 a.m. to tour the city and talk with volunteers.

More than 60 RSVP volunteers have been working in West since the explosion on April 17. More than half of the volunteers also lost their homes.
