Ted Shaw Selected as CEO of the Texas Hospital Association
Austin, Texas (KWKT) — The Texas Hospital Association, the principal advocate for the state's hospitals and health care systems, today confirmed the selection of Walter "Ted" Shaw as the association's next president and chief executive officer.
Shaw will assume the role of president and CEO Feb. 1, 2014 and will serve as THA's key strategist and spokesperson before state policymakers, aligned organizations, and the media on behalf of THA's more than 430 member hospitals. Shaw will be called upon to foster increased collaboration among the diverse groups that comprise the THA membership and will ensure that THA's policy positions are understood by policymakers at all levels of government. Shaw will also seek to identify new and creative ways in which the THA can continue to deliver outstanding program and service offerings to its members, ensuring alignment with its mission of making quality, compassionate, affordable health care accessible to all Texans.

With over 30 years of health care experience in Texas and across the nation, Ted brings a breadth and depth of knowledge and experience to bear on the most critical issues facing hospitals and is well qualified for this role in the constantly evolving health care environment." said George Hernandez, THA board chairman and president and CEO of University Health System San Antonio. "As president and CEO, he will be uniquely positioned to build on THA's success on behalf of our hospitals and health systems, as well as the patients and communities we serve."
Shaw met and spoke with THA staff Thursday, focusing on his vision for the future of the organization.
"I feel honored to be selected to assume this pivotal role at THA, an association strongly advocating for its outstanding member hospitals, health systems, and their patients," Shaw said. "I am excited to serve with talented leaders among its Board of Trustees and the members it represents throughout Texas as well as THA's dedicated staff as we continue to advance innovation, quality, and care delivery across the state."
Shaw currently serves as the interim executive vice president and chief financial officer for Parkland Health and Hospital System and was previously the vice president for Medical Financial Affairs and CFO at the University of Miami Medical Campus. While there, he led the redesign of the financial functions at the School of Medicine. From 2004 to 2011, he was a partner at Financial Resource Group, LLC, a health care consulting firm. Prior to that, he served as president of W. T. Shaw Company from 1998 to 2003. With a history of tackling problems head-on through his skills in strategic planning, capital formation and restructuring, and transforming operating results, Shaw has served many medical institutions as an interim CEO and/or CFO. He has worked for the Jackson Health System, East Jefferson General Hospital, Fletcher Allen Health Care and Maricopa Integrated Healthcare System. Shaw holds a bachelor's degree in business administration in accounting from the University of Texas at Austin.
Shaw replaces Dan Stultz, M.D., FACP, FACHE, who announced his retirement in 2012. During Stultz's time at THA, he oversaw the implementation of the Texas Center for Quality & Patient Safety while also increasing the THA member base and expanding services to those members.
"THA has a special role with a special challenge to help ensure a sound environment to empower our members' gifts for healing," Stultz said. "Ted Shaw understands the complexity of health care finance and delivery, and his experience will serve Texas hospitals and patients well."
Hernandez thanked Stultz Thursday, recognizing him for the integral role he has played since becoming THA's CEO in 2007.
"I want to personally extend my gratitude to Dr. Dan Stultz for his outstanding leadership of THA over the last seven years. With his guidance, we have increased our visibility in leading policy circles, stabilized our internal operations and strengthened our membership base. His contributions have been felt deeply, and we benefit from a stronger THA thanks to his hard work. I think I speak for the full membership in wishing Alice and Dan much happiness in their next chapter," Hernandez said. "Ted is stepping into an organization with a strong foundation, and I know he is looking forward to working with our outstanding staff to continue to push THA forward."
In addition, the THA board expressed its gratitude to the CEO search committee and Gary Brock, Baylor Scott & White Health president and chief operating officer, North Operations, who served as the committee's chair.
